25/2/22 - updated with the opening date
There have been rumblings for some time that top chef Nuno Mendes was fully returning to the London restaurant scene. Since leaving his previous Shoreditch restaurant, Maos, he's been popping up from time to time (like doing brunch at The Scolt Head) but we've been eagerly waiting for a new restaurant.
For fans, like us, who have followed his career since the early days of the groundbreaking Viajante, we're happy to bring you great news - he's opening a Portuguese restaurant, Lisboeta, on Charlotte Street.
As the name suggests, the restaurant will be a little slice of Lisbon transplanted to Fitzrovia. Ranging over three floors, you enter into a room from Lisbon's cafe scene with a long bar for counter dining built from repurposed tram wood. Upstairs there's what sounds like a nice bright, whitewashed dining room and, in the basement, there'll be The Adega dining space by the kitchen (that's opening later on).
On the menu, Nuno is promising both traditional and non-traditional petiscos (they're tapas-like). Lunch and dinner is served family-style with sharing dishes as it would be in Portugal's inimitable tascas. As he explains, the restaurant aims to embody "the very spirit of Lisbon, in an informal yet informative dining space, that showcases the young, vibrant food culture, produce, wine and the gastronomic heritage of my home, in a playful and thoughtful way.”
For this opening, the chef has joined forces with MJMK restaurants who are fast becoming a competitor to JKS, with their own Caso do Frango restaurants and ventures like the much-lauded KOL with Santiago Lastra. Lisboeta will take over the space that once housed iconic London restaurant L'etoile.
