Upstairs at The George sees James Knappett take pub dining to the next level in Fitzrovia

The George in Fitzrovia is the next JKS & James Knappett pub

Back in November, we first reported on the second project by dream team JKS (Gymkhana, Hoppers), James Knappett (Kitchen Table) and publican Dominic Jacobs (The Running Horse) - a makeover of The George in Fitzrovia. That followed their successful opening of The Cadogan on the King's Road in Chelsea.

The Fitzrovia pub opened its ground floor offering before Christmas. That has a short menu of classic English pub food - think Scotch eggs and Ploughmans and their burger and chips.

Now, the team are getting ready to unveil the second, more interesting, stage of their work at The George. Upstairs at The George will feature a dining room, private dining room and English sparkling wine bar.

Starting with the main dining room, this will serve James's upgrade of pub classics (the two-Michelin-starred chef grew up in his family's pubs). On that menu you'll find:

  • Steak Tartare with hay-smoked egg yolk, maple and black pepper sourdough
  • Scottish Langoustine Scampi with chips, tartar sauce and crushed peas
  • Sausage and Mash with homemade wild venison sausage and a lightly seasoned pork shoulder sausage served with mash and onion gravy

"The menu respects the heritage of British pub culture," says James. "While we will use exceptional seasonal ingredients and provenance, our menu will still reflect the magical simplicity of classic pub food."

You'll also find a small wine bar up here serving up more than 80 English sparkling wines from around the country including very special wines from certain estates that, they say, you won't find anywhere else. They've even turned an original Victorian fireplace into an ice well to serve the wine from. Since the Kitchen Table's team's Champagne and hot dog bar Bubbledogs is no more (the space was taken over by Kitchen Table's expansion) we think this is both a nice callback to and evolution from that.

There'll be cocktails too up there too, like Smoked Cherry Kir Royale with applewood smoked amarena cherry and Rathfinny Blanc de Noirs; and a Gimlet with London dry gin, sheep’s sorrel and Granny Smith apple.

Finally, there's also a private dining space, with room for up to 20, alongside a temperature-controlled wine room displaying the pub's extensive wine collection.
