In a nutshell: Nancy Silverton in London
Summing it all up: After a few pop-ups to test the water, Nancy Silverton is coming to London with a permanent restaurant. Pizzeria Mozza will be the London offshoot of her Californian pizzerias, and she'll have her own gelato too.
The low-down
For a while now, it had been rumoured that top Californian chef Nancy Silverton was thinking of opening a restaurant in London. She did pop over for a couple of successful pop-ups at Passo - but finally we have news of the permanent place she's opening. She's bringing Pizzerria Mozza, of which there are two in California, to London.
Silverton is a very big name in American restaurants. She's been featured on Netflix's Chef's Table and also has Michelin-starred Osteria Mozza, chi SPACCA and was the founder of La Brea Bakery. So her opening in London is a big deal. Pizzeria Mozza (co-owned by Joe Bastianich who also partners on the California originals) will be the latest restaurant in Treehouse London, just a few steps from Oxford Circus.
Alongside traditional Margherita pizzas, there will be:
- Napolitana- tomato, mozzarella di bufala, olives, anchovies, chiles & fried capers
- Clams, Red Onion, Garlic, Parsley, Pecorino Romano
- Pizza alla Benno - speck, pineapple, jalapenos, tomato & mozzarella
While other dishes on the menu include:
- Salt Cod Fritti, Celeriac, Remoulade, and Horseradish
- Shrimp with Melon, Mint, and Chilli Lime Vinaigrette
- Squash Blossoms Fritti with Ricotta.
Weekend brunch adds more, including torta rustica with bacon, potatoes, caramelized onions, thyme & fontina. She'll also have her own ice cream, Nancy's Fancy Gelato (flavours in the US include Spiced Stumptown Coffee, Roasted Banana and Salted Peanut Butter) and you'll be able to take away tubs.
Joe Bastianich is in charge of the drinks - expect wines from La Mozza winery and Italian cocktails. As for the look of the place, they're going for a "wild Mediterranean garden".
There have been a fair few pizza restaurants opening in London of late - but this one definitely bears watching.
