Here are the rules on eating out in London restaurants and bars

Here are the current rules on eating out and drinking in London

Restaurants are open again - and all bars and clubs are joining them! Can't keep up with all the changes and any remaining restrictions? We're here to help. On this page, you'll find the latest rules and regulations about eating and drinking in London, and we'll update it as soon as things change. Which they most certainly will.

Can I go out to a restaurant, pub or bar in London?

Right now, you can eat and drink at a restaurant, both inside and out. Here's a breakdown of how things are right now.

Everything has reopened, almost...

  • Now you can eat and drink inside or outside London's pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes
  • There are no limits on how many people can meet up
  • You can order at the bar, if the venue allows
  • Social distancing has been dropped, so tables can now be moved closer together.
  • That all means that nightclubs are now allowed to open.
  • Hotels are fully open (if you're planning on a UK getaway, here's our guide to foodie hotels).

We sense a "but...

That's correct. Although government-mandated restrictions are no longer in place, there have been a lot of "recommendations" for businesses to keep some, self-policed, restrictions in place.

So, when visiting a venue, it's a good idea to check what their regulations are around masks, groups and ordering as they may change from place to place.

What about actually getting to a bar and restaurant?

In London, masks remain mandatory on London transport (Underground, Overground, buses). The rule also remains in place for Uber journeys.

What about Covid passes (e.g. proof of vaccination)?

The covid pass (i.e. proof of vaccination or a recent test) is not currently being rolled out in London. The government has recommended that some venues use this (specifically nightclubs), but we doubt there will be widespread use. Check with your venue just to be sure.

Where do these restrictions apply?

Across England.

There may be differences in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland - but you'll have to look elsewhere for those. Sorry.

And what if I decide to stay in?

Luckily there are lots of places delivering food and drink across London and nationwide. You can find all those in our Staying In guide

Anything else?

Not right now, but God knows the rules have changed a lot in the past with U-turns aplenty. As ever, we'll update this page when they do (and also highlight what's changed).
