Having an outside space matters more than ever for hospitality businesses. Anywhere in London that can do alfresco will have a clear month's extra trading before inside dining resumes in May.
One East London pub's solution to the problem has been to seek help from its customers - and that's been a runaway success.
Leyton's Filly Brook launched a crowdfunding campaign to help transform its bare yard into a green oasis that would be properly weather-proofed. They brought in local landscape gardeners Sam Breeden Landscapes, who came up with a vision of what it could look like and then launched a crowdfunding campaign. Offering rewards like extra bar credit and merchandise they've already succeeded in breaking their £15k target in just one week.
It's all a bit of a boon to the ale and coffee house business which opened its doors in a brand new location just one month before the first lockdown hit. More importantly, it's a signal to other pubs, that their patrons might be the best ones to turn to, to help them survive the next few months.
