Updated 12/2/21 with more menu details
If you're looking for silver linings in these incredibly uncertain times we're in, then we think we can provide you with some of that. St John may, like every other London restaurant, have shut up shop but they've got something rather special up their sleeve.
They're now offering an at-home pie service during Lockdown. As they say "In these extraordinary times, we too are embarking on something a little out of the ordinary."
The service kicks off this week with different pies on offer each week. Quite frankly some of the descriptions are giving us palpitations.
The interior is made up of layers of potato and chunks of brined and braised Saddleback (using the shoulder, cured hocks and pig's head). Suet pastry is used to line the base and so begins the construction of the pie - first a layer of the braised shoulder, hock and head, followed by a layer of potato, repeated until the filling reaches the top. Then there is a final layer of potato, which happily seals the pie's fate. A generous brush of butter on top helps to turn the potato a deep, golden brown.
Each pie is made for two and comes in an enamel dish that you get to keep. All you have to do is pop it in the oven at home. AND for each pie sold, St. JOHN will donate £1 to Streetsmart which helps support homeless and vulnerable people across the UK.
The only downside is that this is a collection-only service from St. JOHN Bread and Wine, Spitalfields. So if you're lucky enough to live close enough to pop by then you are going to fly through the lockdown.
In addition they're expanding their collection menu to include more items like Deep Fried Rabbit, Ox Tongue Hash, Bacon Sandwiches and Apple and Rhubarb Crumbles. All that will be on offer along with wines too.
