Bala Baya in Southwark is bossing the winter alfresco game with its umbrella terrace

Given the Tier 2 rules mean that all socialising is pretty much outdoors for the foreseeable, London's restaurants and bars have been busy weatherproofing their terraces and outside spaces. All of which makes it hard to stand out from the crowd, but Southwark restaurant Bala Baya seems to have succeeded.

They've just opened their Discarded Umbrella Winter Garden. It's a tie in with Discarded Spirits Co and Bala Baya’s neighbour Marcellaio and is constructed entirely from lost and found umbrellas from TFL during the lockdown.

The heated terrace, made all comfy with blankets and cushions, is now serving up a variety of Discarded Spirits cocktails and if you donate an umbrella you'll save £1 off your drink. Drinks include a Banana Old Fashioned made with Discarded Banana Peel Rum and the Unusual Negroni made with Discarded Vermouth from left-over cascara berries discarded during coffee production.
