12/3/21 - updated with launch menu
What: The Farrier
In a nutshell: Grade II listed Camden pub and restaurant
Summing it all up: This new neighbourhood pub and restaurant is taking over a Grade II listed building in Camden and will have both a big focus on natural wine as well as a very handy heated courtyard. They'll even be serving Sunday roasts that you can carve at your own table.
The low-down
Camden's Stable Market has been slowly getting a revamp over the past year or so (although that's been slowed down a little by the pandemic). One of the biggest changes will be a full restoration of the Grade II former horse hospital - which is opening as The Farrier, a new neighbourhood pub and restaurant.
It's put together by three friends from Leeds, George Hartshorn, Chris Gibson and Ollie Patterson who have collectively worked in hospitality for 30 years, and they're looking to create a laid back vibe with the new place.
The food sounds promising, headed up by Ash Finch, who has previously worked with Marcus Wareing and Alain Ducasse as well as at Wild Honey. Dishes on the menu include:
- Cured & poached trout, seaweed, mushroom vinegar, koji
- Crusty game pie, mash, game gravy
- Sole wrapped in chicken skin, burnt sea leek, sea truffle, fermented cucumber
- Toasted grains, miso radish, spring flowers, charred baby onion, meadowsweet leaf tempura
- Rack of Lamb, meadowsweet, pea & reindeer moss
- Roasted banana, pistachio and seared peach tart, coconut cream
- Liquid chocolate square & caramelised white chocolate
- Aerated toffee popcorn cake, toffee sauce, popcorn crub
Plus chips and homemade curry sauce as a side, which we wholeheartedly approve of. And there will be Sunday roasts, of course, with whole roasts to share, including whole ribeye of beef, crusty seasonal vegetable pie, whole guinea fowl and more.
For drinks, there will obviously be beer from Camden Brewery as well as British sparkling on the wine list which will also showcase lesser-known orange wines and rare low production reds. They'll have some of their more premium bottles available by the glass from time to time. And we like the sound of the floor to ceiling wine wall (plus ladder) if you want them to really reach for a unique wine for you.
Music will be a big deal - with a restored vintage Celestion Hi-Fi system at the heart of the venue. As for the look of the place - one of the biggest draws is bound to be the hidden courtyard with outdoor heating and fire pit. We reckon that will be very popular in the coming months.
