The three-tier coronavirus restrictions and how they affect restaurants, bars and pubs in London

New three-tier coronavirus restrictions are here - this is how they affect restaurants, bars and pubs in London

Updated 19/10/20

Another day, another shifting of the eating and drinking landscape for the pandemic age. This week, the government has just revealed three new tier levels that will cover England - and as such may have an impact on the capital's eating and drinking habits. And from today (15 October) the news is that this weekend, London will go up to Tier 2.

But first the good news - restaurants seem to be exempt from the new rules. So it does appear that whatever the tier we end up in - you'll still be able to go out to a restaurant. Here's how the tiers work:

Tier 1 - Medium. Restaurants, pubs and bars all open. Rule of six continues and that good ol' 10pm curfew applies.

Tier 2 - High. (This is what London is right now) At this level, you can still go out to pubs, bars and restaurants, but you can only dine indoors with members of the same household or support bubble.

Tier 3 - Very high. At this level, pubs and bars close unless they serve food.

The restrictions are much less that we expected, to be honest. This still doesn't rule out a full "circuit breaker" lockdown if things continue to spiral, but here's hoping we'll be able to avoid that.

We'll continue to update our page covering the current rules - so if you ever want to know what the rules are in London right now - head straight for this page
