14/9/20 - updated with new opening date
What: Pali Hill and Bandra Bhai
In a nutshell: Indian restaurant upstairs, illicit cocktail bar downstairs.
Summing it all up: Taking over the site that once held classic Indian restaurant Gaylord is a pair of new openings. There's Pali Hill, serving up Indian seasonal dishes and Bandra Bhai, a basement cocktail bar that's inspired by a smuggling den.
The low-down
A pair of Indian restaurateurs are getting ready to open their first London restaurant. Rahul Khanna and Kabir Suri are the people behind Azure Hospitality and they've taken over the site that used to hold classic Indian restaurant Gaylord for over 50 years.
They're replacing that with two new openings. First up is the ground floor Pali Hill (named after an old Mumbai neighbourhood) with a menu of seasonally changing dishes. Those include:
- Girolle and potato stuffed paratha with ghee and lime preserve
- Pan-fried lamb sweet breads with black pepper, cumin, crispy curry leaves and mint
- Grilled Venison lal maas marinated with ginger, herbs and sweet spices
- Stuffed Aubergine, green tomato chutney and hung curd with rice flour
They'll also have gluten-free flatbreads made using rice, jowar and ragi flour and regional classics, chaats, home-style dals and more.
Downstairs will be Bandra Bhai - a cocktail bar that's modelled after an illicit smuggling den. The cocktails are by Luke Ridge (formerly The Ivy Club and Dandelyan) and include The Don which they say "has been inspired by the Bollywood movie character’s love of whisky and spice".
