Great food can be an enormous source of comfort, and the author of a new cookbook hopes not only to provide the people who buy it with great dishes to cook, but also raise funds for those in need.
Community Comfort, is the brainchild of Caribbean food expert and activist Riaz Phillips. He's roped in the services of an incredibly impressive group of friends - all People of Colour - in the food world to provide recipes for the book. The aim is to rais funds for the Majonzi COVID-19 Bereavement Fund in collaboration with the Ubele Initiative.
The Majonzi fund raises money to help those families COVID-19 has touched in the Black and Ethnic minority community, from funeral arrangements to bereavement counsellors and therapists and ALL the proceeds from the book will go to the cause. So far it's raised more than £25k.
And what a line-up of contributors it features. The book includes recipes from Great British Menu winner, James Cochran, Ruby Tandoh, MiMi Aye, Ravneet Gill, Vivek Singh, Benjamina Ebuihi and Romy Gill. There are recipes from restaurants including Bodega Rita, Benares and Dishoom.
"I wanted to do something which brought joy to as many people as possible," says Riaz. "For people in our communities and migrant backgrounds, food is our colour when our voices don’t always get heard, so I gathered all these recipes in hope that they might speak to you and bring you some comfort whilst contributing something back to a community that has so been affected."
Community Comfort is just a tenner, which seems like a total bargain for such riches. You can order it here.
