We've talked a lot about restaurants and bars being closed during lockdown, hotels - not so much. But an email received over the weekend reminded us that London's hotels have been busy behind the scenes, getting themselves ready for the time when they can receive guests again.
The Goring, just around the corner from Buckingham Palace, and a favourite dining spot of Her Majesty, has been using the time to make changes to the jewel in their crown - the garden.
If you haven't been inside the hotel, the entrance on Beeston Place doesn't do anything to advertise the fact that there's a massive private garden. So big, in fact, that it's a few feet larger than Centre Court at Wimbledon.
In an email to guests, the hotel's owner Jeremy Goring explains that the hotel's head gardener has been hard at work making changes. "Alex has been carrying out some very exciting replanting and landscaping in the garden, with the creation of The Secret Garden for your early evening celebrations, and The Woodland Dell for canoodling, or just hiding away in a rainforest atmosphere."
To tie in with the new garden look, they're planning to host "some Glorious Garden events to celebrate both our reopening and life in general." And to go with that "the bar team have been resurrecting and refining elegant cocktails from the Roaring 1920s, to pave the way for the Roaring Goring 2020s."
Sadly one person who won't be returning to The Goring after Lockdown is chef Nathan Outlaw who opened his restaurant Siren at the hotel last summer. News that the chef wouldn't be returning to London was broken on Twitter by Bloomberg's Richard Vines.
Chef Nathan Outlaw says he plans to focus on his business in Cornwall and that, sadly, he doesn't plan to reopen Siren restaurant @TheGoring after the coronavirus lockdown.
