King’s Cross Spanish quarter to expand with pop-up Bar El Rincón

What: Bar El Rincón

In a nutshell: Bar El Rincón pop-up to open in Kings Cross

Summing it all up: The Camino restaurant group, which already has several Spanish tapas bars and restaurants across London, is opening a pop-up called Bar El Rincón in Vanishers Yard in Kings Cross. Open for a year, it’ll be their third outlet in the space, currently home to their Bar Pepito and Camino King’s Cross restaurant.

The low-down

If you’ve ever been killing time waiting for a train near King's Cross and started to feel like you’re somewhere entirely more Spanish-centric after a few drinks, chances are you’ve experienced the Camino effect. The Varnishers Yard development is already home to two of their Spanish bars in (Bar Pepito and Camino King’s Cross), and now the London-based tapas specialists are opening a third there: Bar El Rincón.

It's a one-year pop-up rather than a permanent outlet, but Camino founder Richard Bigg still has big plans: "We were thrilled to be offered the courtyard site next door to Bar Pepito and Camino," he said. "It’s a great opportunity to create a real Spanish Quarter for the local and wider community and we’re hoping to hold festivals and special events come summer."

Bar El Rincón (meaning ‘bar on the corner’) will be a 35-seater wine and tapas bar that focuses on sustainability. "I’m also really excited about working with Borough Wines who’ll be delivering all wines in recyclable and refillable kegs," said Richard. "So no more glass bottles: a 90% lower climatic impact!’"

In a further zero-waste initiative, you can expect several wines and sangria on tap. There’ll also be a couple of other cocktails available as well as two Barcelona beers including Estrella Damm Inedit: a wheat beer made in conjunction with Ferran Adrià, apparently ideal for food pairing.

The tapas will be prepared by Camino’s Executive Chef Nacho del Campo, who's originally from the Basque Country. Here’s what might tempt you to miss your train:

  • Arroz negro (black rice with cuttlefish, squid ink and alioli)
  • Croquetas de jamón
  • Gambas Ajillo (prawns with garlic, chilli and white wine)
  • Ibérico meatballs
  • Cheese and spinach cake
  • Vegan superfood salad (exclusive to this Camino outlet): roasted patty pan pumpkin, mixed sprouts, kale, tabbouleh, pumpkin seeds and lemon zest

There’ll be additional seating in the courtyard in summer months, as well as a 50-cover space available for private hire.
