What: Hans & Gretel, Camden Market
In a nutshell: The first UK outpost of dessert bar Hans & Gretel hits Camden Market
Summing it all up: Dessert fairy tale dreams have arrived in Camden Market with the opening of Hans & Gretel, a chain already popular across Greece, Cyprus and Turkey for its Instagram-popular creations.
If getting into the Christmas spirit means satisfying your inner child as well as your sweet tooth, then Camden Market is already one step ahead. Hans & Gretel have opened their first UK outlet in the North Yard and specialise in fairy-tale-like dessert creations. And the company name is no accident: the store’s interiors aim to resemble the enchanted world of the Brothers Grimm’s Hansel & Gretel tale. Amid the trees decked with fairy lights you’ll find dangling giant lollipops and marshmallows, as well as a replica of a Candy House that’s set up for special photo moments.
Co-founder Lisa Lee says: “We feel we’re bringing a touch of magic to the rejuvenation of the Market’s existing offering, and helping to establish the North Yard as a family friendly foodie destination and look forward to welcoming an audience of visitors of all ages from across the world.”
You may have already encountered Hans & Gretel’s sweet world in Greece, where there are eight stores. Or perhaps in Cyprus or Istanbul. But for first-timers, here’s what to expect:
- Chimney Cake: a sweet dough spun and roasted on a spit to make a crisp, buttery cone that’s caramelised to a crust then dusted with sugar and filled with ice cream and sweets.
- Fantasy Cone: a waffle cone filled with soft serve ice cream and topped with freshly spun candy floss.
- A stand-alone candy floss station for freshly spun cotton candy.
- A broad variety of pick n mix sweets from around the world.
