What: Lucky & Joy
In a nutshell: Chinese-inspired pop-up goes permanent,
Summing it all up: After pop-ups and residencies across town, Lucky and Joy are settling down in Clapton. Expect the usual Chinese-inspired food and drink in a restaurant with a kitsch feel.
The low-down
They've popped up from time to time across London (we visited them in Cambridge Heath) and now the Chinese-inspired Lucky and Joy, from Ellen Parr and Pete Kelly, is setting up a permanent home in Clapton. The restaurant is inspired by trips across South East Asia as well as taking the lead from New York's Chinatown. Expect the 44 seat restaurant to have the same kitsch look as the pop-ups.
On the new menu (where at least half of the dishes are vegetarian/vegan-friendly) will be:
- Xi’an lamb burger’ - served in a freshly baked English muffin-style bun with pickles and chilli
- Crispy chilli squid
- Sesame noodles’ - tossed in a homemade dressing with a chilli kick.
- Sichuan-inspired wontons
- Shiitake turnip cake
- Yunnan cucumber salad
- Typhoon shelter-style sprouts (during the Christmas season)
There will also be new bar snacks including "Crispy fried kidney beans" and "Homemade pickles" to go alongside the cocktail menu which includes Chinese-inspired cocktails like the mojito-style Yunnan Flavour, with coconut-washed vodka, ginger, lemongrass and coriander.
