29/8/19 - Updated with the opening date
What: Pick & Cheese
In a nutshell: Yo Sushi! but with cheese
Summing it all up: If you've ever wondered what entirely new delights the London food scene held for jaded city dwellers, then behold the new cheese conveyor belt restaurant coming your way.
The low-down
We've been wondering when details would start to come through about the traders appearing at the upcoming KERB Seven Dials Market. And if the first one is anything to go by, then the place is going to be rammed come opening day.
Mathew Carver, who was behind both The Cheese Truck and its permanent restaurant The Cheese Bar in Camden, is bringing Londoners a world-first - a cheese conveyor belt experience. Guests at Pick & Cheese (there'll be space for 38 of them) sit up at the counter, Yo Sushi!-style, and watch as plates of 25 different small producer cheeses go past them. You can follow suggestions for a tasting flight, or just grab whatever you like the look of.
Along the 40 metre-long electronic belt you'll find all manner of UK cheese and British charcuterie. Each cheese will be paired with a particular condiment - so Coolea could come with Hazelnut Brittle and Fresh Ricotta with Sherry Cherries. There's also one that particularly caught our eye - "Rollright with a Bacon Treacle Spread". We'll be looking for that one, for sure.
Plus, there will be some "off-belt" dishes including:
- Angloumi Saganaki with honey, fresh oregano and lemon
- A spin on the Cheese Truck grilled cheeses with a Cheddar, Cornish Gouda, British Mozzarella & Stilton Grilled Cheese Sandwich
- An ever-changing cheese soft serve with pear coulis, honeycomb and chocolate - a collaboration with Happy Endings.
Wines will be all-natural, sourced from Les Caves de Pyrene with fresh-from-the-vineyard bottles to try like the organic Pet Nat, from the Davenport winery in Kent.
