What: Lucky Cat

In a nutshell: Gordon Ramsay replaces Maze with an Asian Eating House

Summing it all up: Gordon Ramsay's first new restaurant for years in London will be inspired by 1930s Tokyo drinking dens - it'll take over the spot where Maze was on Grosvenor Square.

It's been a long time since Gordon Ramsay opened a new restaurant in London - five years in fact, with Heddon Street Kitchen. So the news that he was closing Maze on Grosvenor Square and replacing it with Lucky Cat is a pretty big deal (even for his many detractors).

The new restaurant was originally billed as an "authentic Asian Eating House and vibrant late-night lounge, inspired by the drinking dens of 1930s Tokyo and the Far East." However, they entered - ahem -  somewhat stormy waters after a recent preview and that "authentic" claim is now being played down.

The new restaurant takes over from Maze which closed after 14 years. Running the kitchen at Lucky Cat will be Maze's existing executive chef Ben Orpwood. Before Maze, he ran the show at Sexy Fish and, prior to that, spent six years at Zuma.

Dishes you'll find on the menu  - comprised of Asian small plates and Robata grilled dishes - include:

  • Seared Otoro with House Soy, Wakame Oil and Baby Kale
  • Orkney Scallop, Yuzu & Sweetcorn Hot Sauce, Wasabi Leaf (grown in the kitchen here) and Finger Lime
  • Chawan Mushi - steamed and finished with truffle, mushrooms or caviar
  • Passion Fruit & Yuzu Soufflé with Lemongrass & Ginger Sorbet
  • Yum Baba, Robata Roasted Pineapples & Coconut Chantilly

On the drinks side, there will be cocktails like the Lucky Negroni for which three dice are rolled to decide the flavour combination from their selection of gins, vermouths and bitters.

As for the decor, they'll have a major overhaul of the space. They've brought in design studio AfroditiKrassa (who brought us Dishoom) to do the interior honours - and who have also come up with the whole Lucky Cat concept for Gordon. There'll be a raw bar if you fancy counter dining and chef's tables too.

‘I can’t wait to open the doors at Lucky Cat and bring a new flavour of Asian food and culture to Mayfair. I can honestly say there will not be a bad seat in the house – every table will have a unique view and each guest will come away having experienced something sensational - whether it be the phenomenal menu, the amazing service or the stunning look and feel. maze leaves large shoes for us to fill, but I have no doubt Lucky Cat will more than step up to the plate.’ Gordon Ramsay
