What: Emilia

In a nutshell: A new restaurant from Woodhead - the team behind Portland, Clipstone, and Quality Chop House.

Summing it all up: Emilia sees the Quality Chop House team take over the restaurant at Bonhams Auction House. It's inspired by the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.

The low-down

Will Lander and Daniel Morgenthau are already behind some of London’s best restaurants – Portland, Clipstone and Quality Chop House – and for their fourth project they’re taking over Bonhams, another London favourite which previously closed at the end of 2018.

Launching on 26 April, the restaurant is taking its cues from Emilia Romagna, the famed Italian region that’s home to Parmigiano-Reggiano and Osteria Francescana (aka the World’s Best Restaurant), amongst many other things. The space will be split into two sections, with a ground floor cafe and wine bar, plus a full restaurant upstairs.

The kitchen is being headed up by Stuart Andrew, who is currently head chef at Clipstone and will now be moving to be Executive Chef of both restaurants. The sample menu we’ve seen sounds very promising indeed and here's a look at what to expect;

emiliavitelloVitello tonnato, mascarpone & herbs

emiliabrodoSmoked eel & Jersey Royal tortellini in brodo

emiliameatHaunch of venison (obvs), nettle risotto, rainbow chard & walnuts

emiliaeggTart of wilted greens, young leeks, morels & pheasant egg

Emilia will also feature two separate wine lists. One is for everyday wines by the glass and bottle with only a slight leaning towards Italy; the other sixty percent of bottles will be from around the world to show how well non-Italian wines can go with Italian food. There'll also be ‘The Auction List’, a selection of 100+ special bottles sourced with the help of Richard Harvey, Master of Wine and Head of Bonhams Wine Department.

Speaking about their new project, Will and Daniel explained:

Emilia is in part a homage to that region and its food culture but also reflective - as we hope all our restaurants are - of what a good modern restaurant should be with fantastic British produce, a brilliant and broad wine list and engaging waiters.

The combination of a top restaurant team and a very special site within Bonhams should make for a perfect match, so we’re very much looking forward to this one.
