25/10/18 - updated with opening date and first look
What: Sushisamba Covent Garden
In a nutshell: The high-rise restaurant comes slightly down to earth
Summing it all up: After many years of success at the top of the Heron Tower, Sushisamba is opening a second restaurant in London. This time taking up prime estate in Covent Garden's Piazza. Expect a mix of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian food.
The low-down
Every now and again we write about an upcoming restaurant, only for things to go very quiet indeed with regards to updates - and this is the case with Sushisamba's second location in Covent Garden. We first wrote about it in March 2016 (!) but now it's actually upon us.
And it's a pretty prime spot too - they're taking over the Opera Terrace at Covent Garden (that's been vacated by Brasserie Blanc).
And there's been a LOT of renovation. The biggest of that is a new glazed design by Eric Parry architects - replacing the existing conservatory. And we've been told that the bar has a "living ceiling", that there's an open-air terrace looking down on the piazza and the private dining room has its own balcony.
As for the menu, expect the same mix of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian food and we do know there will be the following:
- Robata Octopus with aji panca, peppers and nori
- Kobe Bun with horseradish mayo, aji amarillo, mustard, pickled onion, shallot and nori
- Nashi pear, cranberry, guava, shiso and lime sorbet.
On top of that, expect lots of sake and whisky as well as the Kaifirinha, their take on Brazilian classic and Tom Yam, which is coriander, ginger, lime leaf and chili, spiked with vodka.
