What: Omoide
In a nutshell: Shokuji rice bowls in Bermondsey
Summing it all up: He used to be the head chef at Restaurant Story and now Angelo Sato's gone in a very different direction with his own place Omoide. Expect the very best Japanese rice bowls to go.
The low-down
With all the new openings in London at the moment, every so often one slips us by. And the latest to do so is Angelo Sato's Omoide in Bermondsey, which opened its doors at the beginning of the month (but has an official launch at the end). If you're unfamiliar with Sato, he used to be head chef at Restaurant Story and he's been popping up with residencies and pop-ups since then.
Omoide is a stripped-back affair, concentrating on Shokuji - which is mainly comprised of rice, pickles and soup (and part of kaiseki meals in Japan). You'll be able to order bespoke bowls (only to grab and go) or one of the specialities - which include:
- Yuzu Salmon (£7.50/£9.50) - yuzu-spiked salmon, sushi rice, topped with avocado, cured cucumber, sushi ginger, goma wakame, pickles and crispy shallots
- The Humble Chicken (£7.50/£9.50) - Den dashi chicken on 5-grain sushi rice, with umami mushrooms, shichimi mayo, spicy beansprouts, pickles and crispy shallots.
- Gift from the Garden (£6.95/£8.95) - Miso aubergine, tofu, yuzu avocado, salad and 5-grain sushi mix, charred broccoli, edamame, pickles and crispy shallot
There's also dashi, filled with udon noodle and a ramen egg if you fancy. They're calling the whole thing "Japanese with a European accent, bringing together traditional flavours and Michelin-starred techniques". But it looks like an easy drop-in place, so if you're in the area and need an immediate snack, this should definitely be a place to head for.
