What: La Barra
In a nutshell: Tacos and cocktails for Brixton
Summing it all up: This Market Row spot is the first bricks and mortar space for Joshua Whiting - one half of popular quesadilla team Killa Dilla - and he's planning slow roast meat tacos and pre-batched cocktails for the Brixton crowd.
The low-down
Over in Brixton there's a new taco project about to open. La Barra is the brainchild of Joshua Whiting, one half of the duo behind Killa Dilla and Tacos del Rey.
"This is my first bricks and mortar, grown up place," Josh told Hot Dinners. "The opportunity to take the venue came up on very short notice, but it was something I couldn't turn down." Seems the whole refit was done on a bit of shoestring, with Josh doing all the work, bar the shop front paint job, himself. And that was only because he didn't have a ladder tall enough.
They're going to be doing plenty of slow roasted meats on the tacos, along with home made salsa and pickles. Tacos on the launch menu include one with 8-hour pork shoulder with burnt pineapple and pink onion as well as a vegan mushroom adobo with cashew crema and guacamole. And there's also tortilla chips or chicharron topped with with fermented chilli queso or guacamole.
On the drinks front, there's no actual bar at the space, so John will be sorting out pre-batched cocktails, keeping it simple with a few well curated offerings and (of course) an emphasis on tequila and mezcal. For the opening weekend, you can expect some seriously good margaritas.
