What: Flipside
In a nutshell: Plant-based cafe by day, hip burger joint by night in Farringdon
Summing it all up: Right around the corner from the meat traders at Smithfield Market is this new plant-based all day spot, serving up smoothies and juices in the morning, salads and soups at lunch and then turning into a fully-fledged burger spot in the evening.
The low-down
It feels like we've written a LOT of stories about plant-based, fast food restaurants opening in London recently. And the latest to join the likes of Buffalo, Genesis and By Chloe is Flipside.
Launching this month on Cowcross Street in Farringdon, the premise of Flipside is that on the face of it it looks just like a trendy burger bar, but it's actually a fully plant-based all day spot. As they say it's all about food that's "a little juicier, more primal, and lust-worthy" than other folk are serving up. During the day they'll be after the office breakfast and lunch crowd with more grab and go stuff on offer. In the evening it'll operate as more of a burger joint serving up fries, sides, thick malt shakes and cold beers.
The duo behind it are Jen Pardoe and Claudia Tarry who have been at this plant-based lark for a while with their business PB2B and their backer is Dee Thaya - wholesale retailer turned restaurant investor. The 30 cover restaurant, just around the corner from Smithfield Meat Market, has room for 30 diners including, what we think will be a popular spot, a a private telephone box downstairs if you want something more cosy.
As for the food itself, morning options range from organic chickpea scramble boxes to sourdough donuts [sic] with almond feta and honey. You can grab an organic Bullet coffee or fresh-pressed juices or smoothie to go. Lunchtime it switches up to a choice of 30 sandwiches and salads and they'll have a ‘Mac Bar’ where you can customise your mac & cheese with everything from baked shiitake to caramelised onions and roasted cherry tomatoes.
In the evenings the burger menu comes into play with dishes like the ‘Beyond Burger’, the ‘Who Ya Callin’ Chicken’ Burger, and ‘The Flipside Quarter Pounder’ are alongside Chicken Salt Fries, Loaded Nachos and Skinny Apple Slaw – all air-fried. For dessert there's Baked Alaska and warm cookies and brownies and ice-cream.
