Nigerian food is about to have a well-deserved moment in the spotlight with the arrival of Chuku's, a sibling-run pop-up in Hackney who’ll be dishing up Nigerian tapas for five weeks, before moving to a more permanent site.
They’ll be turning out a blend of authentic dishes with a contemporary twist, like Jollof Quinoa, sweet Plantain Waffles and a savoury vegan Moi Moi black-eyed bean tart. There are quite a lot of vegan options actually - we counted at least 10 on the menu.
Those will sit alongside other, slightly more traditional options, like:
- Grilled beef meatballs peppered with suya spice including cloves, ginger, chillies and kuli kuli
- Sticky chicken wings coated in a caramel infused with kuli kuli
- Vegan coleslaw Naija-style with a vinaigrette made from an indigenous melon seed.
- ‘Eba & Egusi’ - Fluffy cassava dumplings with egusi melon seed and leafy kale soup
Brother-sister duo Emeka and Ifeyinwa Frederick have already been covered by the foodie sorts at Time Out, and the Great British Entrepreneur Awards have taken notice too, so we’re expecting good things.
If you’re tempted, head down to Nest from Thursdays to Sundays until early September. After that, you’ll need to venture to their bricks-and-mortar venue - though at the moment, the location is still very much a work in progress. We’ll let you know once we learn more.
