The Weekly Edit
From a limited edition sarnie at Breddos to cake you can drink we bring you all the news that was fit to print (but we just didn't get around to covering elsewhere this week)...
Your filthy Friday treat
Running until 27 May at Breddos Clerkenwell restauran is their fried chicken Cemita — the taco joint's take on the Mexican classic. They came up with it to celebrate British Sandwich week (20th-27th May) and it features fried chicken, bacon, Oaxaca cheese, arbol salsa, avocado, pickled shallots, coriander, jalapeños, onions, and a sesame bun. It costs £10 and we want one right now.
Having your cake and drinking it
If you prefer your consumption of cake to be accompanied by alcohol, then a caketail bar popping up for one night only should be on your to-do list. Whitechapel's Simmons Bar is serving up the one unit combos of cake and booze between to mark Cake Month on Food Network. Choose between: Espresso Martini - chocolatey sponge topped with mascarpone and coffee beans; Pink Grapefruit Gin And Tonic - sponge, fruit jelly and curd finished with a grapefruit wedge or Lime Margarita - a lime sponge topped with a tequila infused jelly, finished with a sugar glaze. Prebook your caketail here between 3 and 7pm on 17 May.
The all-green pub
As every restaurant in London prepares to put more veg-focused dishes on their menus for National Vegetarian Week, one pub in Farringdon has gone The Full Monty. For a month (until 2 June) The Fence will only be serving veggie and vegan food. Not only that, they'll also have vegan prosecco, champagne and beer and a Hard Juice Bar serving up superfood cocktails.
Tottenham's BBQ Cheeseathon
If you need to up your dairy intake, head to Tottenham's Five Miles Bar & Brewery on Saturday 19 May when local Holly Chaves, of Wine & Rind, is teaming up with the brewery for a one day takeover. Dishes we're promised include Cacio e Pepe BBQ Baked Potatoes, Charred Kupros Dairy Halloumi & Feta and - wait for it - Gorgonzola 99’s Ice Cream Sundaes.
Our kind of race - one ending with a champagne breakfast
Maxed out by the Marathon and looking for more of a challenge than your average triatholon? Sign up now for The Tower Race alongside Michelin-star chef Chris Galvin, and First Dates Maître d'hôtel, Fred Sirieix. The circuit includes a 5km dash around Hyde Park, through the underpass on Park Lane before tackling the 28 flights of stairs at the London Hilton on Park Lane Hotel. Good news though - everyone who reaches the finishing line at Galvin at Windows Restaurant get a Champagne breakfast. The event raises funds for youth empowerment charity, Galvin's Chance.
Turn your lunch into a Thai takeaway
We're always interested in anything that amps up the usual fast food experience, so the arrive of Tuk Shop in Shaftesbury Avenue sounds worth a punt. The pop-up's a collaboration between LEON and and Bangkok-based food group Aylmer Aaharn (who include Michelin-starred Nahm among their assets) and will serve up aromatic curries, noodles, rice dishes and salads.
