What: Alpes
In a nutshell: Alpine cheesefest in Brixton
Summing it all up: Street traders the Raclette Brothers are opening a restaurant at Pop Brixton with Alpine-inspired food. So if fondue, raclette and tartiflette are your thing, then you know where to come.
The low-down
If your idea of a good time is recreating the kind of food you enjoyed on your last skiing holiday, then you're in luck. London street food folk Raclette Brothers are opening a restaurant at Pop Brixton and Alpes will be all about the food served up in that part of the world.
Obviously there is going to be a lot of grilled cheese. They'll be serving up raclette for one thing - with a choice of Raclette de Savoie, a traditional high-Alpine cheese or Bermondsey Raclette from Kappacasein. There'll be three types of fondue - Savoyarde, Blue and British - with unlimited sides and dips of roast new potatoes, fries, salad, pickles and baguette. Oh and tartiflette too.
There are bigger dishes of Beef Bourguignon served with pomme soufflé and girolles and vegans are catered for too with cauliflower fondant, topped with deep-fried cauliflower shavings and a yeasted cauliflower purée with mint dressing and pickled raisins.
But if all that sounds just a touch lardy, they have lighter dishes planned too, like charred asparagus with hazelnut pesto and butter bean hummus. Although the bar snacks section sounds brilliant too - rosti balls made with house-made sauerkraut served with truffle mayo and crispy curd bites served with fig molasses.
The menu will feature cured meats from Borough Market’s Cannon & Cannon and cheeses from Neal’s Yard, Alsop & Walker, Comte from Borough Cheese Co and Swiss artisan cheese from Jumi. And the restaurant's founders, Steve and Jamie, will be bringing in herbs and edible flowers from their allotment in Brockwell Park.
We also love the sound of the weekly ‘Waste Not, Want Not’ on a Tuesday evening where dishes will be created from their own and other kitchens at Pop Brixton from ingredients that might otherwise be thrown away. Better still, profits from these events will go back into the community.
You'll find Alpes above the main entrance of Pop Brixton. There'll be a long bar with stool seating down the middle as well as an outside terrace with fondue tables for groups.
