In a nutshell: Macaron ice-cream sandwich popup goes permanent
Summing it all up: If you've never made it down to Sammie Le's ice-cream pop-up you can now try her permanent parlour in Chinatown selling ice-cream, milkshakes and the macaron ice-cream sandwiches that are her signature.
The low-down
Chinatown is fast becoming a top London dessert destination. The queues at Bubblewrap are legendary, there's a place, TSUJIRI, devoted to matcha patisserie and now we hear that popular street food spot Yolkin is about to open its first permanent spot there.
Founder Sammie Le first started selling her incredibly Instagram-friendly ice cream macarons at Rupert Street’s Street Food Union market back in 2015. And now she's returned to the same street to open her shop. The whole idea came from an obsession with making macarons. Not wanting to waste the yolks left over from that process she realised she could make ice-cream with them and the whole thing snowballed from there.
At the shop you'll be able to buy that ice-cream in simple scoops, as soft serve, in milkshakes, and in her signature macaron ice cream sandwiches. Flavours reflect Sammie's London/Chinese/Vietnamese background - so there's everything from lychee, black sesame and HK Milk Tea, to banoffee, Earl Grey and salted caramel. Other flavours include a new vegan pandan and coconut option and she's even promising an Asian twist on Arctic Rolls.
We expect there'll be queues out the door when it opens, but if you do want to eat in there'll be 18 seats inside too.
