It's all go at Old Spitalfields Market where Nuno Mendes has moved his Portuguese restaurant Taberna do Mercado out of its bricks and mortar spot and into the market proper. He'll then be opening a wine bar and bottle shop in the old premises.
In a post earlier this week on Instagram, Mendes said: "2018 brings quiet change, we are excited to announce that Taberna do Mercado will be moving into the Kitchens at Old Spitalfields Market...exciting times! Reinvent yourself or die."
A spokesperson for the chef told Hot Dinners that they were viewing it as a positive move with Nuno seeing it as a chance to showcase Taberna in its entirety while at the same time providing Old Spitalfields Market with a wine bar and bottle shop. And of course The Kitchens at Old Spitalfields were actually developed and curated by Nuno's Ten Ten partnership, so he's really just joining the company he created.
And their aim? "Capturing the true spirit of a market Taberna," as the restaurant's website says, "we will be creating an elevated outdoor dining experience as part of the new concept curated by Nuno and his partners at Ten Ten." We don't know too much about what that'll be in practice but expect dishes like Bacalhau à Brás - salt cod with eggs and potatoes.
