He may not be everyone's cup of tea (particularly if you're one of his zero hours contract workers) but sommeliers across town must be happy when they see Sports Direct boss Mike Ashley come through their doors. In testimony in the high court this week, jurors heard all about Ashley's epic spending on wine.
One particular instance caught the court's attention, when four years ago he cleaned Mayfair restaurant Benares out of top end wines in just one dinner.
The court was told yesterday that at a dinner with the company's non-executive directors, Ashley's guests were supplied with the most expensive red wine available at the restaurant, which was Richebourg costing in the range of £3000 per bottle. Having purchased and drunk ALL the Richebourg, Ashley then had to move on to second best for his guests, continuing with the Penfolds Grange at £875 per bottle.
They must have been all out of the Château Haut-Brion which is currently £1999 a bottle on the Benares wine list.
