A Hot Dinners exclusive
What: Trawler Trash
In a nutshell: A new fish restaurant for Islington
Summing it all up: Expect a sustainable, weekly changing seafood menu. And there's a cocktail bar at the back too.
The low-down
This new seafood restaurant is taking over from Seafish on Islington's Upper Street, a location that has been serving up fish and chips for 50 years.
As for that "trash" in the title, it's because the restaurant will be focusing on the fish that often get disregarded in favour of the traditional catch. So there will be fish like pilchards, coley, sprat, grey mullet and crayfish on the menu. There are no freezers and they'll only be serving fish that's delivered that day (which means they won't be open on a Monday, which is a day of rest for the trawler men).
We've been passing by the place almost every day and the whole place is being completely refit, so expect something very different when it opens. We're told is will still have that fish and chip shop feel along with some "luxe elements". Expect lots of polished concrete, exposed bricks and an open kitchen too. At the back of the restaurant, there's a new cocktail bar, seating 12, while they'll get a further 50 into the main restaurant.
It's coming from Fork and Blade, the people behind The Black Penny in Covent Garden and Firedog in Fitzrovia with George Notley, the Executive Chef of the group in charge of the menu. here's what we can expect:
- Charred cuttlefish, kohlrabi, coriander dressing
- Air-dried charred octopus, green tomatoes, chilli
- White bait, panzanella
- Charred asparagus, tartare, crispy fish skin salt
- Toast beer battered coley, chips, crushed peas, tartare
- Kipper carbonara, peas, rocket, chilli
- Pan roasted hake, cauliflower, wild mushrooms, puy lentil vinaigrette
