Updated 2/3/17 with opening date and menu details
Up until now, the only way you'd get to try Rick Stein's food is by heading due South West, either to Padstow or beyond to one of his 10 restaurants. But now, after 40 years in the business, the TV chef is expanding to London. He and ex-wife Jill have just bought the Depot in Barnes. They're going to continue running the restaurant as is for the moment, but it's all change at Christmas where they'll shut for a refubishment.
Their new London outpost is in Tideway Yard, close to the centre of Barnes. And while it may not have views of the sea, what it does have is a huge conservatory with gorgeous views over the river Thames. There'll also be outside seating when the weather warms up with circular seating around an olive tree.
Commenting on the decision, Stein said: “I’ve often been asked if I’ll ever have a restaurant in London, and to be honest, I’ve always said I wouldn’t; but when I went to have a look at The Depot it struck me how perfect a place it was: overlooking the Thames, being wonderfully close to central London but far enough out to feel like you’re in your own community, a little village almost.
"I watched people popping in on their way home from work, escaping the hustle and bustle of city life to sit back, have some food and a good bottle of wine and relax. It’s such an exciting opportunity and one that we wanted to accept with pleasure.”
All the usual Stein classics will be on offer as well as some new London specials including Stifado rabbit stew with caramelised onions, red wine, cinnamon, currants and sautéed potatoes and a London cure smoked salmon with horseradish cream and homemade walnut bread. See the full menu here.
There'll also be a small seafood bar serving fresh oysters, langoustines and sashimi along with a separate bar area.
Rick Stein, Barnes opens on 17 March 2017 as a Stein’s Trading Ltd restaurant at Tideway Yard, 125 Mortlake High St, London SW14 8SN. To book call 0208 878 9462. Keep up with their news on Twitter @steinbarnes
