Just 9 months after introducing Soho to 'Rock n Roll ramen', Bone Daddies chef and founder Ross Shonhan is now set to take casual Japanese dining to a new level by opening a 150 seat Izakaya-style restaurant on Earlham street in Covent Garden.
Scheduled to open next month, 'Flesh and Buns' is significantly larger than their first restaurant, the 60 seat Bone Daddies Ramen Bar in Soho. Shonhan aims to use the additional space to serve an extended menu of casual Japanese food designed for sharing. Situated below street level, the venue will feature a number of larger tables to accommodate groups and will take reservations. There will also be a proper cocktail bar dedicated to serving up a short selection of Japanese-inspired drinks including frozen yuzu margaritas, Japanese whiskeys and Shochu, a Japanese liquor.
The main feature on the food menu at Flesh and Buns are the 'Hirata' buns which are served with a choice of 'flesh'. These will be served on a build your own style sharing platter along with sauce, a choice of pickles and lettuce. The choice of meats will rotate regularly and will include options such as lamb chops, whole sea bass or pork.
There will also be a 'short, sharp and simple' raw menu of sashimi, small cold salads and sushi rolls. For dessert, the team have also been working on perfecting their version of 'Smores' which feature green tea, white chocolate and matcha. These will be served along with a tabletop grill which guests will toast themselves.
As with Bone Daddies, Shonhan and his team has overseen the development of every item on the menu which, apart from the Hirata buns will all be made in-house.
Shonhan said: 'Following the Bone Daddies philosophy, I want Flesh and Buns to be an accessible and casual place where people can relax and enjoy a good cross section of Japanese cooking and some great drinks at a decent price.'
Flesh and Buns will be the latest addition to a number of high profile openings this year responsible for drawing diners back towards Covent Garden and the surrounding area. The restaurant will be open 7 days for lunch and dinner. Lunch is expected to cost around £20 whilst Dinner (with drinks) will be £35-45 per head.
Flesh and Buns will open at 41 Earlham Street, London WC2H 9LX August 8 - and booking opens on their website later today. For more information follow them @fleshandbuns.
