Gastropub
37 Pimlico Road, London SW1W 8NE
This new gastropub comes from the owners of previously lauded gastropubs The Thomas Cubitt and The Pantechnicon. This is their first pub with rooms in Pimlico. There's a wood-fired oven for pizzas and roasts and 4 en-suite bedrooms.
243 Brompton Road, London SW3 2EP
Knightsbridge stalwart Brasseries St Quentin is reinvented and reopened as the Brompton Bar and Grill. Die-hard fans of the old brasserie might be upset after nearly 30 years of restaurant history was thrown out with the revamp, but there's a lot to recommend the fresh new look and menu it seems.
47 Hereford Road, London W2 5AH
This porter house and oyster bar has certainly pulled out all the stops when it comes to decor - reviewers have universally praised the gastropub's clubby ambience. Unfortunately the food doesn't live up to its surroundings - but if the Notting Hill set take it to their heart, that probably won't matter much.
24 York Way, London N1 9AA
Located in the gradually up and coming area of King's Cross, The Fellow offers the usual gastropub fare. You'll also find a handy roof terrace if you want to, understandably, escape from King's Cross street level.
Rainville Road, London W6 9HA
This longstanding pub in Hammersmith with a large beer garden overlooking the Thames has had a gastro makeover from the Realpubs crowd.
360 Victoria Park Road, London E9 7BT
This Victoria Park gastropub owes its existence to Andrew Maillard, formerly of London's premier cocktail bar Alphabet Bar.
43 Linhope Street, London NW1 6HL
Have the owners of this gastro-pub made the classic mistake of spending all their time and effort on the decor rather than the food? While most of the critics found the whimsical interior design a delight, the same couldn't be said for the food or the menu.
21 Sherbrooke Road, Fulham, London SW6 7HX
This clean-cut restaurant/bar opened with a cut-throat attitude to pricing that's bound to win it plenty of punters, attracted by the idea of four small plates (or British tapas) for a tenner. Worth checking out particularly in summer for its dining room with retracting sunroof.
16 Balham Hill, London SW12 9EB
Sometimes if you want to find somewhere decent to eat and drink in your manor, you have to go out and open it yourself. That's the mantra behind Avalon - the owners are all locals with four other South London gastropubs under their belt. It looks like they've used all their learnings on Avalon which looks to be a huge hit in these here parts.
3 Hatton Wall, London EC1N 8HX
Brothers Tom and Ed Martin have made a career turning old boozers into gastropubs - some with notable success (The Botanist, Well Tavern and The Gun). But nobody seems to much like the Hat and Tun. Perhaps it's that in less penny pinching times we might have let an overpriced menu or wine list slide, but these days London diners (and critics) are more likely to stand up and decry such a blatant attempt to separate them from their hard-earned wages.
27 Coldharbour, Docklands, London, E14 9NS
The Gun is an ever-popular Docklands pub right by the river, now run by Fullers. It's based in a 19th Century building (it takes its name from the cannon that was fired at the opening of the West India Docks). There's a seasonal British menu on offer and ideally, you'll want to grab a table on their riverside terrace.
