Clotted cream and salted caramel scones - we try out Paul A Young's new afternoon tea

Clotted cream and salted caramel scones - we try out Paul A Young's new afternoon teaIs there much better than scones and clotted cream? Maybe scones, clotted cream and a massive dollop of salted caramel. That's the thinking behind master chocolatier Paul A Young's new cream tea - now available daily at his flagship shop in Heal's, on Tottenham Court Road. We popped along to take a look.

The scones, Paul explains, are made to a traditional Victorian recipe before cutters came on the scene: their rustic shape begs to be broken in half by hand. The brown sugar lends a treacly flavour and a lovely crunch while inside, the scone is properly moist and crumbly. There are large cups of Paul's own salted caramel and Roddas clotted cream and it's up to you how much you cram onto the scone.

A choice of tea by the the Rare Tea Company ranges from a fragrant white tea with jasmine flowers to traditional black tea. To top it off, there's one of Paul's famous salted caramel chocolates, in case you're not having a big enough sugar rush.

For those hurrying back to work - the cream tea is also available to take away: if you've got time to linger they'll be serving it all day long - why limit your cream tea to the afternoon? Better still, you can pick up a box of chocolates or a chocolate brownie in the shop, to take home.

Paul A Young at Heals is at 196 Tottenham Court Road W1T 7LQ. Tel 0207 437 0011. The tea costs £12.95 eat in or take away

Hot Dinners were invited to try the Paul A Young Afternoon Tea.
