Walthamstow pie shop Manze given Grade II listing by English Heritage

Walthamstow pie shop Manze given Grade II listing by English HeritageManze Pie Shop in Walthamstow has been serving up pie, liquor and mash since the 1920s and this week it was awarded listed building status by English Heritage.

The Pie and Mash shop on Walthamstow High Street, which first opened in 1929, was given Grade II listed status by Heritage Minister Ed Vaizey.

Roger Bowdler, Designation Director for English Heritage explained the decision to list the building, saying; “Eel, pie and mash shops are a unique feature of the London scene, and represent some of our oldest traditions of fast food. This 1920s example with its beautifully preserved interior is among the best of an increasingly rare kind, and strongly deserves to be listed.”

This latest listing brings the number of London's listed pie shops to five; Manze's shops on Chapel Market and Tower Bridge Road are also listed as are the Cockney Eel and Pie Shop on Commercial Road and F Cooke's on Kingsland Road.
