The Fourteenth Colonie brings a Brooklyn style vibe to Clerkenwell

Updated 16/2 with details of soft launch

If you've been wondering what exactly is going to replace Giant Robot on Clerkenwell Road, then let us enlighten you. It's being taken over by a bar and restaurant called The Fourteenth Colonie. We caught up with Paul Garner, MD of Ruth and Robinson, the company behind it, to find out more.

So what's with the name?

It's inspired by our friends in Brooklyn and the fact that there were 13 colonies set up in the US between 1607-1733 on the East Coast. The name plays on the fact that the Europeans went to colonise the states. Now it's time for us to share the amazing inspiration we have found there and bring it back.

We heard that this is the first of many...

We have a plan to open 8 sites over the next 8 years across London so the name “The Fourteenth Colonie” was very appropriate.

How would you describe what it's going to be like?

The Fourteenth Colonie brings you a touch of authentic Brooklyn to EC1. Working in partnership with the fantastic team at Colonie NYC we will deliver something for everyone, indulgent (and healthy) brunch dishes, craft beer from the USA and London, perfectly executed cocktails, fine wines and much more…All in a space that feels light and airy during daylight and dark & moody once it get dark - just like Brooklyn!”

Who's going to be running the place?

Mark Oaikhiena (formerly of The Yorkshire Grey WC1 & The Alice House NW3) will be in charge of the kitchen. Becky Ogiliev (formerly of Geronimo & The Yorkshire Grey WC1) will be the General Manager. (Editor's note - there's an interesting hire in play from the States, but that's yet to be confirmed).

What's on the menu?

There'll be an amazing NYC brunch – pumpkin waffles, Nutella french toast, amazing salads, eggs many ways and tasty burgers. Lunch Will showcase NYC style sandwiches, soups and salads, and the evening will be more grills and fresh fish with selections of cheese and meats to go with our craft beers and wines.

And to drink?

Drinks will focus on the best beers from NYC and London and cocktails developed from Colonie (showcasing Brooklyn Brewery special brews). Seasonality will be a big part of our cocktail offer, fresh ingredients used to give as much flavour as possible. Our wine offer will feature Old World wines, focusing on biodynamic and organic producers. There'll also be a fine whiskey selection.

The Fourteenth Colonie will open at 45 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1M 5RS. They'll be on soft launch from 24 - 26 February 2015 (50% off food). You can sign up for their soft launch here. Opening hours will be 9–12am Mon-Wed, 9-2am Thurs-Sat and 10am-10pm on Sundays. For more information, follow them @14th_colonie
