Updated 13/11/13 with opening date
We've known for a while that Martin Morales – the man behind popular Peruvian restaurant Ceviche – was to open his second venue in Shoreditch. Originally expected to be a second Ceviche, it's been revealed as a completely new restaurant, Andina. Due to open on Redchurch Street in December, Andina takes its influence from Peruvian ‘picanterias’, traditional family run restaurants serving local people from breakfast through to dinner.
Andina will be open all day serving traditional fare from the Peruvian Andes. London’s got the hang of ceviche now, but what can we expect from this Andean cuisine? Breakfast includes the likes of Kiwicha con Manzana y Membrillo (Andean highland breakfast grain, apple & quince) and Pastel de Choclo con Huevos (corn cake with poached eggs).
For lunch you can sample Empanada de Alpaca (lean alpaca meat pastie), and Ensalada Quechua con Sacha Inchi (Andean bean & greens salad with Sacha Inchi nut oil); and for dinner choices include Seco de Cordero (braised lamb, coriander & dark beer stew) and Cod cheeks and Hake Tiradito (cod cheeks in tiger's milk with hake, mandarin & red grapefruit).
A ‘Games Room’ above the main dining area will be used for private dining and cooking master classes as well as housing Morales’ (a former DJ) collection of more than 2,000 Peruvian funk records. We won’t claim to be any kind of expert on Peruvian funk but it all sounds like a lot of fun.
Peruvian cuisine has been one of the big stories in the London restaurant scene this year and with Lima winning a Michelin star last week its popularity shows no sign of waning. Having already had a big hit with Ceviche, Martin Morales should be on to a sure fire winner with Andina.
Andina will open on Thursday 5 December 2013 at 1 Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, London, E2 7DJ. Keep up with the news by following it @andinalondon
