What: Mamma Mia! The Party
In a nutshell: Abba dinner theatre heading to London
Summing it all up: There are plans afoot to bring the Abba dinner theatre experience to London - expect retsina, renditions and a lot of audience participation
If you’re wild about Abba and loved Mamma Mia the movie and all its summery Greek vibes, then great news - Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus has plans in the works to transform a Waterloo venue into a dinner-theatre celebration of the Mamma Mia! stage show: Mama Mia! The Party.
Participants will be invited to “spend a magical summer evening with friends in a very special Greek island taverna, where the host’s only rules are dance, dine and have the time of [their] lives.”
This means the night will come complete with a Greek taverna-style restaurant, so diners can eat the food that will complement the immersive show, which will include songs from the musical. Die hard fans (we know you’re out there) will be pleased to know that there’ll be a few new characters and a new story too.
“When you step through the doors for the first time you’ll feel as if you’re right in the heart of a Greek island paradise!” reads the website.
So far, the project has only been applied for, so it remains to be seen whether or not permission will be granted to build the show. But if it goes ahead, it’ll be following in the footsteps of the Shaftesbury Avenue branch of LEON http://www.hot-dinners.com/Gastroblog/Latest-news/leon-shaftesbury-avenue-puts-on-singing-staff where all-singing, all-dancing staff perform live to customers, whether they’re asked to or not.
Mama Mia! The Party in London would be a sister project to one Bjorn has been running in Stockholm since January 2016, which has been quite a hit too, from the sound of things - “at the end of each performance people stand up and sing and dance in the aisles,” Bjorn said.
