Gordon Ramsay opening Union Street Cafe in Southwark

Gordon Ramsay opening Union Street Cafe in Southwark with David Beckham[Updated 4/9/13 with head chef details. We now also hear that David Beckham is no longer involved - read the story on that here]

Gordon Ramsay is working on the opening of another new restaurant in London. Union Street Cafe will be on two floors in Harling House on the intersection of Union Street and Great Suffolk Street in Southwark with a focus on Mediterranean cooking.

According to the News of the World, the site in question cost Ramsay £235,000 for a 35-year-lease and is 'the first place bought open and run without any involvement from Chris [Hutcheson]. Gordon wants to prove he can run the operation and cut the deals as well as being a celebrity chef.' Ramsay's partner in this venture is none other than David Beckham. This brings the long rumour that Becks was coming in on a deal with his good friend Gordon to fruition.

"David Beckham is going to be my sous chef," Gordon joked to the Sunday Times, but declines to go into too much detail on what to expect, other than that it will be relatively affordable with dinner costing between £25-30 a head, later adding "There will be a real focus on the most amazing produce, cooked in a simple Mediterranean style in a relaxed setting.”

Since then, more details have been revealed. The restaurant will focus on Mediterranean seasonal ingredients  with an emphasis on Italian artisan producers. They'll be complementing this with whatever is on hand from popular local foodie markets at Borough and Maltby Street. Dishes on the daily changing menu will include Veal carpaccio with lemon, anchovy, olive and celery, Baked spiny lobster with chilli and marjoram and Torn pasta with artichoke, pancetta, mint and ricotta.

The design will be by Russell Sage, who was also behind the much lauded design at Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen and will include a downstairs bar  serving "classic Italian as well as innovative new cocktails with a London influence". There will be a separate bar snacks menu too.

The head chef will be Davide Degiovanni, the former Head Chef at Amaranto at the Four Seasons in London.

Union Street Cafe will open at 47-51 Great Suffolk Street, London SE1 0BS on September 16 2013. Book on their website.
