Only available for a few months throughout the year and foraged almost exclusively from one part of Italy (although Croatian truffles are making more of an appearance), truffles are a rare and luxurious commodity. From budget dishes to blowout dinners, chefs across London use this seasonal ingredient to show off their truffle-hunting connections every year. But you, gentle readers, have no need for a porcine creature to sniff them out, we’ve done that for you. Here’s our guide on where you can find them in London.
20 Savile Row, London W1S 3PR
We just happened upon the truffle menu at Sartoria (we were there to try their cocktail pop-up) but the egg tagiolini with Grana Padano Riserva (£28) was one of the nicest things we've tasted in a good long while. It's just one dish on a small but perfectly formed truffle menu that chef Francesco Mazzei is serving up until Christmas Eve.
Bocca Di Lupo
12 Archer St, London W1D 7BB
This year, Bocca di Lupo is going for a Bring Your Own take on the season, inviting guests to bring their own truffles, which will be cleaned by staff and served with a selection of dishes designed for the addition of truffles such as this radish, celeriac, pomegranate and pecorino salad, which comes served with a truffle dressing (pictured). The menu costs £80.
The Savoy Grill
Savoy Hotel, 1 Savoy Ct, London WC2R 0EU
Head Chef Kim Woodward has gone back in the hotel's history for her inspiration, using original Escoffier dishes in a four course menu for truffle lovers for £65. Dishes include smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and truffle and linguini with black truffles.
1 Poultry, London EC2R 8EJ
City spot Coq d’Argent has teamed up with French mustard folk Maille for a special menu which will run until 30 November. The 6 course mustard and truffle tasting menu includes veal cutlet, creamy wild mushroom sauce, Chablis and black truffle mustard mashed potatoes; and Dark Chocolate and Confit Orange tart, Grand-Marnier and truffle ice cream macaroon. It's £95, or £150 with wine pairings.
43-45 Lonsdale Rd, London NW6 6RA
Ostuni will be celebrating the truffle season with a dedicated and unique black tartufo menu running until December at both the Highgate and Queen’s Park Ostuni restaurants. Dishes include roast partridge wrapped in truffle packed pancetta slices and fresh Puglian capocollo of pork thinly sliced and wrapped around provolone cheese, Cardoncelli mushrooms and fresh black truffle.
Truffles with EVERYTHING at Trufflesecco
11 Camden High St, London NW1 7JE
The clue to the obsession at this newish Camden restaurant is in the name - it's all about truffles (and Prosecco). Seasonal dishes come and go, but one that's always on the menu is the burrata with fresh truffles - a snip at £13.
Truffled Italian dining at Daphne's
112 Draycott Ave, London SW3 3AE
Daphne’s menu is full of seasonal Italian dishes which they reckon are perfect for showcasing the truffle at its best - beef carpaccio, homemade tagliatelle and beef fillet with baby spinach and polenta, all with white truffle from Le Marche.
