Brad Carter comes to London with Undercroft in Mayfair

15/5/24 - updated with the opening date

He's been a huge hit in Birmingham (with Carters of Moseley and One Star Döner), and now Londoners are going to get a chance to see what chef Brad Carter is all about.

He's opening Undercroft, in the crypt of the Grade 1 listed St George’s Church in Mayfair, teaming up with music industry honcho Martin Priestnall. Hidden away downstairs in what should be a very impressive setting, the menu will look at reviving lost British classics, with his own take on them of course. On that menu, we can expect dishes like:

  • Wild garlic chicken toast
  • Tamworth pork with creamed snails & sorrel
  • BBQ aged duck with offal’d oats
  • Bread pudding with Beauvale and Cotswold sherry

There will be a bar down there, plus a wine room at the back and the open kitchen will be a big part of the restaurant. They'll also be showcasing art throughout and there's also room for a 20 seat private dining room.

The historic church (it was built by an assistant to Sir Christopher Wren and Handel used to be a regular parishioner) is going to be a dramatic setting for the restaurant. Set under a vaulted ceiling and designed by Tristram Hillier of Kanvass and Russell Sage Studios it certainly promises to be one of the more impressive-looking restaurants to open in Mayfair. That said, if you don't like the idea of eating in a crypt, they'll have some outside terrace dining too.

"We've always been keen to make the move to London," says Brad who's opening the restaurant with his wife Holly.  "[We] spent years searching for the right place to open and the undercroft at St George’s Church couldn’t be more perfect."
