Borough Market’s Oma gets a sibling ground-floor restaurant called Agora

Borough Market shows no sign of slowing down with its exciting new restaurant openings. We recently told you about the forthcoming Greek-inspired Oma from David Carter and former Kiln and Sabor chefs. It just became even more interesting, with the news that the ground floor below it will house Agora, a smaller, more casual sister restaurant and bar.

Inspired by the buzz of Athens’ food streets, Agora(Greek for ‘market’) will feature a two-metre souvla rotisserie, a wood-burning oven and a retractable shopfront, where tables merge into Borough Market itself. Founder David Carter – who also launched Smokestak and co-founded Manteca, sees it as the yang to Oma’s yin. While Oma might be a peaceful oasis from the market’s pace, Agora is seen as a more boisterous option for casual groups keen to sample flavours from a whole spit-roast pig or native-breed chicken, lamb and pork (all sourced from Somerset and Cornwall).

While lunches absorb the hectic market atmosphere, in the evenings, the plan is for Agora to dim the lights, relax into languid dining and pump out the tunes while dreaming of Athens-appropriate weather. If you’re the type who wants to do a reconnaissance before committing to too much action, you can also grab a takeaway coffee from the outward-facing bar or perhaps even a sticky date bun to impress your office colleagues. Then return to perch yourself at the bar for a frozen green chilli margarita and somehow still find yourself there hours later.
