The Tamil Crown is the second Islington pub from the Tamil Prince team

The Tamil Crown is the second Islington pub from the Tamil Prince team

5/11/23 - updated with the opening date

We have some exciting (and exclusive) news for fans of South Indian food. Following the successful 2022 launch of The Tamil Prince in Islington, the owners are bringing a second restaurant to the neighbourhood – just a half-hour walk towards Angel - called The Tamil Crown.

While The Tamil Crown, which is taking over the Charles Lamb Pub site on Elia St, will bring a bit more of a pub atmosphere, you can still expect Indian and Tamil dishes created by Prince Durairaj (the former Roti King chef). Spanning two floors, the building has had extensive renovations and diners are encouraged to relax over pints and bar snacks by the open fire, sample a Tamil draught beer at the speakeasy bar or share platters in the dining room, snug or outdoor area.

One highlight is Sunday roasts with an Indian twist. Choose from roasted lamb shank, Masala roast beef, Masala roast chicken or a vegetarian roast, along with both British- and Indian-inspired trimmings, such as turmeric roast potatoes, coconut lentil cabbage, potato and green peas thokku, spiced fried cauliflower, beetroot raita, roast carrots, rice, vegetable avial, Yorkshire pudding, and even Sambar curry.

The regular menu is divided into bar snacks that are popular at The Tamil Prince (okra fries, onion bhaji, chicken lollipops) as well as new offerings (shoestring masala fries, banana chips, samosas). From the small plates and large plates selection, you can expect:

  • Beef masala uttapam pancake with spicy coconut chutney
  • Lime-leaf-roasted chicken with pineapple chutney
  • Bhel puri: puffed rice, vegetables, and tamarind sauce
  • Karaikudi crab masala: a whole roasted crab, sharing style
  • Coconut prawn moilee
  • Aubergine curry

As for drinks there’ll be cocktails designed and bottled for the pub from East London’s award-winning Three Sheets, wines on tap from Unchartered Wines, cask beers from Purity, as well as the usual London pub classics, and a selection of bottled Indian beers.
