The Tate Modern is launching new riverside bar and cafe, Corner

Tate Modern gets new riverside bar and cafe, The Corner

London's galleries are shaking things up a little. We've only just had the reopening of The National Portrait Gallery with Larry's in the basement and Richard Corrigan on the rooftop and now Tate Modern is planning a new bar and cafe too.

The new addition is called Corner and, on top of its main bar and cafe, adds a riverside terrace to Tate Modern looking out onto the Thames. And as part of that terrace, they're bringing Nathan Coley’s illuminated sculpture, We We Must Cultivate Our Garden outside too. As the name suggests, it'll be on the corner of the Tate Modern and they've created a brand new entrance for it.

For the food, we're told to expect art-inspired cocktails (inspired by the current exhibitions), sharing plates, sandwiches, and cakes with food that's "international but rooted in British suppliers". Corner will open into the evening, at which point it'll shift from cafe to bar. For that, there will also be a wine list taken from the Tate's cellar, which Tate CEO Hamish Anderson has been building up for 20 years.

As with all the food at the Tate, profits will go back into the gallery itself to help maintain the art. There's not a great deal in the way of decent riverside bars in that area, so this could be a very handy new addition.
