The Som Saa duo are opening Kolae Thai bar and grill in Borough Market

Som Saa duo are opening Kolae in Borough Market

28/9/23 - updated with the opening date and menu details

We knew way back in 2019 that the people behind Som Saa, Mark Dobbie and Andy Oliver, had a successful crowdfunder for a new restaurant. But with the pandemic messing up the timing a little, things went quiet - until now. The result of the crowdfunder is that they're opening Kolae in Borough Market.

The restaurant is named after a style of cooking from the southern provinces of Thailand, which involves ingredients (usually chicken) in a curry-like coconut marinade grilled over open flames. So you'll see some of that on the menu here. They'll have half kolae chicken, marinated in a sauce of lemongrass, fresh turmeric and black pepper. Alongside that, the menu will include:

  • Fried prawn heads with turmeric and garlic
  • Rice crackers with grilled pork jowl, banana blossom and roasted chilli jam
  • Horse mango salad with dried shrimp and roasted coconut
  • Southern Gati curry of seasonal whole fish

In addition to the food, you'll find cocktails with their own twists, including a Pickled Green Mango Dirty Martini.

As for the location, they're taking over an old London coach house, for a restaurant that's split across three floors and will have its own courtyard (as well as a private dining room right at the top).
